A real rediscovery for the clarinet repertoire is the virtuoso concerto by Julius Rietz (1812-1877), a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and conductor at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. The tonal language, similar to that of Mendelssohn, and the enthusiasm of the solo clarinet have lost nothing of their attraction to date, as is proven by the phenomenal new recording with Sharon Kam as a soloist.
