Romanze: Klarinette und Klavier. (Edition Schott Einzelausgabe) [Musiknoten]

The clarinet virtuoso and educationalist Carl Baermann from Munich was one of the most important musical figures of the 19th century. His teaching literature strongly influenced clarinet education and the further technical development of the clarinet. His Romantic compositions form an integral part of the clarinet repertoire. Romanze for clarinet and piano, a sentimental work of great emotional substance, has proved a popular concert and encore piece. Baermann’s Romanze is also suitable as a performance piece for competitions – a valuable addition to the repertoire of every clarinettist. Instrumentation: clarinet and piano

1. Bläserquintett: „Muzika aizlidojusajiem putniem“ · „Musik für wegziehende Vögel“. Flöte, Oboe, Klarinette, Horn und Fagott. (Edition Schott) [Musiknoten]

This is the first of two works by the successful Latvian composer for this instrumentation. It was written in 1977 and shows his early compositional style: while freely notated in the beginning, improvisational sections then change over to chordal passages with sharply accentuated rhythm. It is particularly in the freely notated parts of the work that birdcalls and nature sounds appear as onomatopoeic sounds. The particular challenge is not in the virtuosity of the individual part, but in creating the special atmosphere through perfect harmony. As in most other works by the composer, the bond with nature plays a special role. Unlike any other composer, he gives nature a musical voice. Instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon

4 Bohemian Sketches: for Oboe (Flute, Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone) and Piano. Oboe (Flöte, Klarinette, Sopran-Saxophon) und Klavier. (Edition Schott) [Musiknoten]

The ‚4 Bohemian Sketches‘ were originally composed as 8 Bohemian duos for piano duet (ED 4779). They are a mixture of ‚real‘ and ‚invented‘ folk music. With these pieces, Husa follows examples like Schumann, Hindemith and Bartok who also wrote music for young amateurs and those making music at home. They are music for playing in the best sense and can be used very early in instrumental lessons. Husa was born in Prague, studied with Arthur Honegger and Nadia Boulanger, among others, at the Paris Conservatoire and worked as a professor of music theory at the New York Cornell University in the USA for many years. Instrumentation: oboe (flute, clarinet, soprano saxophone) and piano

Poème: aus der Idylle „Am Abend“. op. 39. Klarinette in B und Klavier. (Edition Schott Einzelausgabe) [Musiknoten]

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and Antonín Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich’s musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection ‚Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences‘ Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a ‚piano diary‘. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem ‚In the Evening‘ Op. 39 (also known as ‚A Summer’s Evening‘ and ‚At Twilight‘), written in 1893. For his second subject in this ‚Idyll‘ Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled ‚Lento‘, from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan Kubelík played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title ‚Poème‘, and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude. Instrumentation: clarinet in Bb and piano op. 39

Quintett: op. 50. Flöte, Oboe, Klarinette, Horn und Fagott. (Edition Schott) [Musiknoten]

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) studied composition with Walter Braunfels and Heinrich Lemacher. He taught as a professor of music theory at the Conservatoire of Cologne and ranks among the most important German church and organ music composers of the 20th century. His extensive chamber music oeuvre which shows parallels to contemporary composers such as Hindemith, Genzmer or Pepping is little known. The Quintet Op. 50 is characterised by its neoclassical form, free tonality as well as rhythm in motion, setting the performer rewarding instrumental tasks. The Wind Quintet Op. 50 was composed in 1981 and is now published for the first time. The movements are: 1. Molto sostenuto/Allegro – 2. Adagio molto – 3. Scherzo – 4. Lento/Allegro. Instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon op. 50
