Johann Georg Heinrich Backofen und Joseph Fröhlich verfassten unabhängig voneinander zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts je eine Schule zum Erlernen des Klarinettenspiels und veröffentlichten Jahre später eine revidierte Neuausgabe (Backofen: erste Ausgabe 1803 und zweite Ausgabe 1824; Fröhlich 1813 und 1829). Obwohl bei beiden Autoren jeweils die spätere Ausgabe auf die erste aufbaut, sind diese dennoch als eigenständige und neu konzipierte Schriften anzusehen. In beiden Autoren vereinen sich der Pädagoge, der Musiker und der Musikgelehrte. Vorliegende Arbeit vergleicht und dokumentiert an Hand dieser Lehrwerke die musikästhetischen Veränderungen und die Fortschritte im Instrumentenbau im Lauf der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts.
